History & Heritage
Whilst Binfield Heath is known and loved today for its Anglo-Saxon heritage, its rise in popularity began rather unintentionally. Due to the quality of the land which was deemed too infertile for agricultural use, the village predominately functioned as a crossing point for travellers - its two main roads providing crucial through-routes to Shiplake and Henley. Here, settlements began to form at their crossing. Fast forward to 2003, its very own Civil Parish was created due to popular demand of its residents, joined also by the Hamlet of Crowsley.
Home, at last
On entrance, the traditional iron gate and yew hedge ensure privacy from passersby ambling down the lane, before leading onto a large gravel driveway, capable of fitting 6 to 7 cars. However, the Victorian Style Coach House is a beautiful alternative for storing motor vehicles, providing an additional three parking spaces.
Throughout the property is a combination of modern fixtures and fittings - such as underfloor heating and motion-activated lighting in the utility and cloakroom. Furnished and painted with neutral colours, Gosbrook House has a contemporary and clean finish that is consistent from room-to-room, making its occasional period pieces all the more special.
Ways to Dine
Socialites will be spoilt for choice when it comes to entertaining. The open plan kitchen/diner showcases a fashionable central island for the liveliest of mealtimes. With splendid views of the back garden and access via concertina doors, the kitchen is a great hub to reconvene and catch up on the day’s excitements. Alternatively, take to the patio for some al fresco dining, your favourite music and a cosy blanket with loved ones.
Whilst Gosbrook House is an expansive property, it is undoubtedly warm and inviting. With a choice of two fireside settings - either the aga wood burning stove in the sitting room or the Biolection fireplace in the drawing-room - comfort is key. This gorgeous Biolection fireplace supplied by Jamb of Pimlico is made of Bath Stone; its light honey colour only adding to the room’s warmth. Double timber doors lead onto the garden - half-glazed to utilise the natural light - with steps to the outdoor paved terrace.
A Moment’s Peace
On the top floor are three en-suite bedrooms and two good sized bedrooms. The master bedroom benefits from a glorious south-facing view of the garden, access to a generously sized dressing room and a show-stopping en-suite: this includes a freestanding double ended bath, a glass screened walk-in shower and a marble-topped vanity unit. The remaining four bedrooms are light, airy and finished to an exceptionally high standard.
There is also a large family bathroom with a stylish white four-piece suite which includes a freestanding roll top double ended bath with mixer taps, plus the addition of an overhead shower and separate shower to the corner with a glazed screen.
Fun for All
For those green-fingered, there are approximately two acres of land to get stuck into, although it is hardly necessary: shrubs of various varieties border the garden and are sheltered by mature trees that scatter the lawn with pockets of sunshine and shade. A small paddock, fruit cages and a landscaped pond create an effortlessly wild feel, perfect for adventurous kiddies.
Gosbrook House truly comes into its own in summer. Between rallies in the tennis court and a volleyball in the pool, this outdoor space will provide endless entertainment for all members of the family.
You can even follow the Saxon trails just as the Vikings did, trekking along the Thames near Shiplake, and pause for a pint and nibble along the way for something more low-key.
Shops, Pubs and More…
Aside from its traditional post office/ village shop, there are plenty of amenities nearby.
The Bottle and Glass Pub is a characterful bar which attracts customers from all over the country for its exquisite seasonal menus, bustling beer garden and dining on the terrace. Another popular choice is the 18th-century Michelin star pub, Orwells, which prides itself upon using local produce and high-quality ingredients.
There are a handful of great schools for those still in education, such as The Oratory, Sonning Common primary school, Shiplake primary school and Shiplake College. Shiplake station is just over 2.5 miles from the property - just a short journey away from London Paddington and Reading where shops and work are plentiful.
Binfield Heath’s nearest market town is Henley-On-Thames situated within driving distance. Home to the famous Henley Royal Regatta and events such as Henley Festival and Rewind Festival - the town also continues the market tradition in the square which takes place every Thursday for trade.
